Latest News!!!
If you've been following the news, you will probably not know that an Australian citizen will join Eddie soon unless his lawyers can beat the Spore govt... Ok i m talking abt this guy...

His full name Nguyen Tuong Van, an australian citizen. Doesn't he look like a decent guy? In 2002 this guy brought in nearly 400grams of heroin into Changi Airport while transitting from his flight back to Australia.

He was arrested by Singapore police and is scheduled to be hanged in Spore on 2 December 2005. News of his hanging has created quite a stir in Australia especially in his hometown of Victoria(correct me if i'm wrong).
The oppostion government has called for economic sanctions on Spore, this quote from the Austalian newspaper The Age:

Shadow foreign affairs minister Kevin Rudd yesterday called on the Federal Government to stage a formal diplomatic protest against the execution of Nguyen Tuong Van "to get some sense and compassion out of the Singaporean Government".

Singapore has rejected all appeals, including a public campaign seeking clemency for Nguyen, 25, who is to be hanged for importing heroin.

Mr Rudd told ABC's Insiders program that Singapore had treated Australians and the Government with contempt.

"We've had representations from the Pope, from the Prime Minister, the Governor-General, the Opposition, a resolution of the Australian Parliament and representations from a huge cross-section of the Australian people. The Singaporean Government's response to that has been to tell us all to go jump in the lake," Mr Rudd said.

Australian Democrats foreign affairs spokeswoman Natasha Stott Despoja urged the Government to use economic pressure.

And the Australian Democrats called for economic sanctions to be imposed on Singapore if the hanging goes ahead on December 2.

The Age- 21 Nov 2005.

Cant believe they actually asked the pope to intervine for this man...

Anyway because of the outstanding freedom in media coverage in Spore(ranked 149th out of 160 countries),most Sporeans will never know that many Australians are protesting against our country and have signed a petition against the hanging of this man. Some are even prepared to boycott Spore products... Not very good for SIA who has plans to merge with Quantas.
So those Sporeans planning to go Down Under in December may wanna reconsider their travel plans i guess lest you be discrimanted if the aussies find out you are Sporean.
For my friends studying in Australia now, my advice is dun wear a t-shirt with a Spore flag and walk around your neighbourhood.

The Australian Prime minister John Howard has pleaded with our Prime minister to reconsider hanging his citizen... Recently at a Apec Forum in Korea, he said Australia remains intensely opposed to the execution of Australian drug smuggler.

The legal team of convicted drug smuggler Van Nguyen is pursuing one last option - its trying to bring a case against the Singaporean mandatory death penalty before the International Court of Justice

The federal Opposition believes there may be precedents which could allow Nguyen's case to be heard by the International Court.
Labor's Kevin Rudd says Singapore has already allowed the court to adjudicate on other matters.

"For example Singapore in recent times is engaged in a territorial matter with Malaysia, both are subjected to the jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice," he said.

Looks like someone's going to have a bad headache.... Maybe he might need some advice from the MM/his father. In the end he might decide to say:

The only man who can grant clemency to the Australian...

A life in this man's hands and the world is watching him as he decides....

Meanwhile, lets wait and see how this drama unfolds....
